Justifying Judas

Lee takes on Christianity... again

Jerry Springer The Opera creator Stewart Lee is to risk further enraging the Christian right with a new show about Judas.

In the monologue, Judas justifies his betrayal of Christ ‘using words, rope and food’.

And Lee warned: ‘This is a pretentious one-man theatre piece, not the kind of laugh-filled gag-fests I do as a stand-up.’

He is performing an early work-in-progress version of the show at South London’s Battersea Arts Centre next Tuesday and Wednesday, ahead of a proper run at the Bush Theatre, Shepherds Bush, in January.

Lee also revealed that he will be performing at the Edinburgh Festival next summer with a new stand-up show ‘possibly featuring me dressed as a duck’.

Meanwhile, his 2005 show, 90’s Comedian, inspired by his run-in with the Christian Voice pressure group, will be released on DVD by Go Faster Stripe later this month, ahead of its final outing at Soho Theatre, for a week from December 18. Tickets.

  • The first instalment of Lee’s two-part Radio 4 documentary about native American clowns, White Face Dark Heart, goes out next Tuesday at 11.30am
