Me old China

Merton to front travelogue series

Paul Merton is to front a major travel documentary series about China.

The four-part show will air on Five, making it the comedian’s first significant TV role outside of the BBC for a decade.

Producers Tiger Aspect admit: ‘Paul Merton is not really what you’d call a seasoned traveller.’

But they add: ‘According to everything Paul reads, China will, within his lifetime, easily eclipse America as the global superpower. So he has decided it’s time to look at China for himself to gain some first-hand experience of the nation that will soon be providing a whole new set of cultural values and influences.’

It is Merton’s first show for Five. He last appeared outside the BBC in the 1996 ITV series Paul Merton in Galton and Simpson's..., which remade classic Tony Hancock scripts.

Production started on the hour-long travelogues in July.
