Sandi Toksvig is to chair the next series of Radio 4's News Quiz.

She will replace Simon Hoggart, who has decided to quit the show after a decade, saying: ‘I'm getting a bit clapped out and jaded, and I think that's beginning to show.’

Toksvig, 47, said: ‘Following in Simon's footsteps is daunting. He has been a wonderful chair and a pleasure to work with. I shall do my best to keep the rabble in order and elicit some sense from them.’

Danish-born Toksvig, a regular panellist on the show, will be the fourth chairman since it began in 1977.

Its first chairman was Barry Norman, followed by Barry Took who co-chaired it with Hoggart in the Eighties until Simon took on the mantel full time in 1996.

The News Quiz returns to Radio 4 on Friday September 8.
