Simpsons boss praises Gervais

Ricky Gervais's episode of The Simpsons has been given the thumbs-up by creator Matt Groening.

The Extras star has finished writing his episode in which his character Charles, loosely based on The Office’s David Brent, falls for Marge while taking part in the Wife Swap reality show.

And Groening was so pleased with the result, he said he’d be happy for Gervais to return.

‘Ricky’s episode is fantastic,’ he said ‘He caught our tone exactly, and then added his own Ricky Gervais/David Brent patheticness - his own extremely special brand of excruciating humour.

‘It's possible we'll collaborate again. He should be a regular character.’

Groening, 51, has also said he wants Catherine Tate and Little Britain's David Walliams and Matt Lucas as guest stars

Gervais's episode is due to be screened in the US in the spring. He described joining the show as a ‘dream come true’.
