Coupling star lands US sitcom

Coupling star Sarah Alexander is to star in a new American sitcom about disillusioned schoolteachers.

She plays a rookie British teacher in Fillmore High, which is set to air at 9pm n Tuesdays this autumn.

The NBC network has decided to test out the sitcom in a limited six-episode ‘midseason’ run after originally turning it down in May.

It stars Justin Bartha, from the National Treasure movie, as an unconventional English teacher at the New Jersey school.

Chortle reader Polly Martin, who has seen the pilot episode of the show, described it as ‘awesome’.

NBC is desperately looking for a new sitcom hit, with a paltry four shows running for the full autumn season.

They are Joey, Will & Grace, The Office: An American Workplace (which failed to attract the ratings to match its warm critical reception) and promising newcomer My Name Is Earl.

Meanwhile, Alexander is also starring opposite Michelle Pfeiffer and Tracey Ullman in a new movie comedy called I Could Never Be Your Woman, directed by Clueless helmer Amy Heckerling and due for release next year.
