Satirist cancels Edinburgh shows

American satirist Michael Moore has pulled out of the Edinburgh Festival.

He has cancelled his run at the Assembly Rooms after his mother died suddenly.

His appearance, premiering his first live one-man show, was expected to be one of the highlights of the Fringe, but a venue spokesman said: "He really felt he couldn't go on."

The baseball-capped humourist has won legions of fans for his populist stunts targeting corporate America.

His book about George W. Bush's administration, Stupid White Men, is a bestseller and his latest film, Bowling For Columbine, was unanimously awarded the Anniversary Prize at this year's Cannes Film Festival.
