Although a relative newcomer Ray Kane, is undeniably skilled at working a room, confidently launching his set with some compere-like call-and-response shenanigans to get the crowd onside.

The cornerstone of his set is a rock-solid song about a hoodies – the usual musical comedy deal of mediocre material and buzzwords (like ‘hoodie’, for starters) given a huge lift by the guitar accompaniment. It’s standard fare, but he does prove very good at it and a regular guest slot on a radio variety show surely cannot be far away.

It’s harnessing the power of crowd control though, that makes him such a hit, and he can elicit a huge cheer simply for calling Wayne Rooney ‘a fat spotty chav’, even though it’s hardly a pithy insult worthy of the quotation books.

Finally, he closes his set with an impressive visual routine, involving a very funny image, smartly exploited. Something, then, for almost everyone.
