Ken Dodd
Date Of Birth: 08/11/1927
Dodd started his career as a ventriloquist - and indeed still uses the Dicky Mint dummy in his act.
However, his success came through his exaggerated on-stage persona - the manic hairstyle, protruding teeth and, of course, trademark tickling stick - combined with a relentless stream of one-liners, peppered with nonsense words like 'tattifilarious', that can - and do - entertain audiences for hours.
He built his reputation as a live performer on the variety stage, and famously logs audience reactions to jokes every night, building up a picture of what plays well where.
His career was boosted with appearances on TV, often just guest roles, but his bizarre appearance would always stick in the mind. He also has a penchant for sickly ballads, as well as his signature tune Happiness, recording several albums of love songs and notching up 19 top 40 hits, including the 1965 chart-topper Tears.
Dodd became embroiled in a tax-dodging case in the Eighties, and was eventually cleared, but the case revealed much about Dodd's eccentric private life, too.

We went to see Ken last night at the Sunderland Empire. He was fantastic and just so funny. Shame we had to leave early, as the car park was closing at 11.30. Hope to see him again soon.
carole gilbert - 30/12/2012
just watched an audience with Ken Dodd. What a fantastic man he is a true artist, one in a million and he has been around all my life but still makes me laughx brilliant
Claire - 16/06/2011
To those who don't find Doddy funny, have your sense of humour bypass reversed!
Roy Batley - 13/05/2011
We went to see Ken at Potters at Hopton Norfolk and could not hear anything as the sound system was useless. Sad as we have seen him at proper theatres and enjoyed ourselves with his humour, but not so this last time.
Amanda - 30/12/2010
My granddaughter, daughter and myself went to see Ken tonight in Liverpool, sorry we went - should have kept the old memories, left an hour into the show (after hoping it was going to get better) which it never did. I think its time Ken bowed out gracefully now.
S Padgett - 11/10/2010
Ken Dodd. Brilliant is what he was on Sunday October 10th at the Grand Blackpool. Perhaps a few of the audience got withdrawal symptoms as there was no filth or foul language. Just cheeky jokes and witty stories. What a lovely change. Carry on the good work Ken. So sorry we had to leave a little early as the car park closed at 12.30 am. We would have been prepared to pay double the price.
Phil - 14/08/2010
Watched Ken at the Whitley Bay Playhouse August 2010 and he was simply marvellous.
mrs lynne wills - 15/07/2010
Ken is the most funniest man on this earth, and he does indeed need a fitting title as Sir Ken. He's the funniest loveliest man and I just love him to bits.
Matthew - 24/04/2010
He's incredible. Saw him in Cardiff a couple of years ago and he was on stage for the best part of five hours firing gags non-stop. The real deal.
Ian Rollins - 20/01/2009
Saw Ken Dodd at Kendal. Took 90 yr old mother, who loves him. After over three hrs to the interval we decided, along with a third of the audience, to go home sadly. Mum's comment was, 'what a shame, He's lost the plot. He should retire before he ruins his good name'. She was right. Sad end to a brilliant career. Sorry Ken, we'll remember you as you were if you don't mind. Ian.
David - 18/01/2009
We saw Ken at Leeds City Varieties in one the last shows before it closes for refurbishment. It's the first time we'd seen him and for entertainment & comedic value, the show was superb, full of good honest fun for the family and beautifully delivered by a master of art.
MONICA - 04/11/2007
We love Ken Dodd. It's about time he got recognition for all he has done for good clean entertainment. He should be knighted
june Hobbs & James Harford - 21/10/2007
Saw Ken in Northampton on the 20th October what a lovely guy. How he keeps going is beyond me and he certainly gives value for money. Unlike some who just about manage an hour or hour and half of entertainment for the same price. Everyone left the theatre happy, smiling and talking to one another. He should be given a knighthood.
L.E. Williams - 06/05/2007
Ken Dodd. Birmingham Hippodrome May 5, 2007. Wow, what can i say? Probably the worst thing I've ever seen, no, for the money, it WAS the worst thing I have ever seen. It takes a few minutes of watching a comedian to get a good idea of what they will be like. He was dire from the very start. He made me laugh on very few occassions, I looked around to make sure I wasn't having a lack of humour night. No, there were many stone faced people. He introduced a female musical act after about an hour, she was diabolical. I though we had paid to see professionals. The next act was a magic act. Hah, his 'magic' was so old! He produced doves from the back of his long black jacket and pretended that he had magiced them from a silk hankie. Pathetic! Ken Dodd reappeared, not as if by magic, i might add. More rubbish material. It was so bad that we were willing the interval to come. At last, a chance to escape, the thought of sitting through hours more of that trash was horrible. I loved Ken Dodd when i was a kid and thought his 'an audience with' hilarious. He is now a well past it, sometimes incoherent 80 year old that should hang up his tickling stick NOW.
John G. Wood - 25/10/2006
I saw Ken at Blackpool on Sunday. He was brilliant, gag after gag after gag. The man is a comic genius, loved every minute. Show started at 7.30 and we left the theatre at 12.55, and we were full of hapiness, which still hasn't worn off yet, even though I am back to work! Brilliant. Well done Ken.
Wendy - 25/10/2006
Ken Dodd is a true star of the stage! I class myself at 43 to be at the younger end of his fan brigade, my son aged 16 a mere baby!! What a shame there aren't more DVDss available for Ken's army of fans to buy. No matter how many times I watch Ken Dodd I still laugh time and time again. The man is pure genius
A.P. - 14/10/2006
Saw his show in Southport recently. In between his coughing fits he was lacklustre. Not the Ken Dodd of old and definitely past his sell-by date.
Mike - 10/09/2006
Just seen Ken's show in Torquay. 5 hours of good honest fun. The man is a genius
Brian - 31/07/2006
Thank you Ken. Excellent evening entertainment. full of fun for all the family. You can make people laugh without swearing.
Sam Houldsworth - 30/07/2006
I've never laughed so much in my whole life. His show went on from 7pm untill 12:40am which was amazing for a chap of his age. I left the theatre feeling very tickled indeed
Jill Brownsword - 22/07/2006
Fabulously funny. I laughed until I cried, the best night out I've ever had. We booked to go to dee Doddy at the Derby Assembly Rooms and were told by friends 'Do not book your taxi home' We never left the theatre until about 1am. The man is a genius and sadly the last of a long line of truly British comedians
Jonathan Lilley - 07/07/2006
Ken Dodd is a comic genius whose talent will is beyond measure. In my opinion he should be knighted for services to Britain.
Paul - 26/06/2006
My wife conned me into seeing him at Hull. I thought that he looked old and past it, but how wrong I was. I have never laughed so much in all my life for so long, I thought my pants would never dry. For someone to entertain so many people in this way without swearing once is truly remarkable. We will watch him any time and know that it is money well spent and a hell of a good night. More power to him
Sam - 16/06/2006
Personally Ken Dodd has been my fave comedian since i first saw him when i was about 7 or 8 (am 21 now), I watch his videos all the time and i never get enough of it i agree that he does not get enough recgonition for what he does his shows are amazing and he puts everything into one thing - making the fans happy, making people smile and he loves doing it. I am very much looking forward to seeing his show in a few days.
Jason and Faye - 10/06/2006
I took my wife and mother to see Ken at The Lowry in Manchester last Sunday, and although he was looking his age at 79 and a little tired, He gaves us the funniest 4 hours of entertainment we have seen in a long time. Our ages range from 25 to 57 and is humour was universal and loved by all. God bless you Ken, the Greatest Diddyman of all
Michael - 04/04/2006
I went to see Ken Dodd on Boxing day, and my main impression was how old fashioned the whole experience was. Most of his material seemed to date back to a time well before I was born, something that was particularly apparent in his very traditional, coy use of innuendo. I understood a lot more about the era he came from as a result, but I wouldn't call it great comedy
Rosalie Tasker - 05/03/2006
I discovered Ken during a wet weekend in Australia, staying with English friends. I was flabbergastered and amazed at his wit and natural British hilarity, such a talent. I can't get him out of my mind. I love him already.
John Newall - 03/03/2006
I went to see Ken Dodd at the Parr Hall Warrington. He started at 7.30 and we were still laughing well after midnight. Where I was sitting I could see that off stage were lots of props still unused. He could have gone on all night, and probably would have. The best value for money I have had in a long time. Keep it up Ken
Kathy Danby - 18/02/2006
There is only one word to describe Ken Dodd - brilliant! He is one of the few comedians who can perform for hours without a rude word passing his lips. There is plenty of innuendo, but as someone once said, it's all in the mind. Doddy suits all ages - my ten year old granddaughter laughs at him too. It's incredible to realise he will be 80 next year. don't suppose I shall ever go to one of his shows again, as I now live in Orkney, but I shall certainly take it if the opportunity presents itself
Curmudgeon - 18/02/2006
As I now live in exile in the USA I really do miss the comic genius of Ken Dodd and for that matter his wonderful singing voice
Gary Weston - 26/01/2006
A genius! A man who had dedicated his life to making people laugh. God bless you Ken and thanks for sharing your gifts with us.
Hannah Ward - 21/01/2006
The funniest man on earth
Aiden Bates - 20/01/2006
I wish Ken Dodd was on TV. There's nothing funny on TV any more and Ken is the best we've got. Hope there's many more years yet, Ken.
Rosie Elbert - 19/01/2006
Live on forever and never turn out the light. Of all the other comedy greats, I've never laughed as much as I did when saw him last year and two years before that. He always brings a smile to my face and always will.
Maria - 12/01/2006
The funniest man alive.
Kevin Jackson - 30/11/2005
Only one word for him: legendary
Sheila - 05/11/2005
The first time I have seen Ken live was last night in Carlisle,he deserves a knighthood. Please carry on forever Ken, you are a genius.
Wigginsbottom - 03/11/2005
Saw Ken on Saturday in Birmingham with my 16 year old. He started at 7.30 and kept going until 12.40. Amazingly in this day and age he was funny, a natural wit, with no swearing or abuse. I couldn't believe it when I found out he is 78! He has more stamina and style than comics young enough to be his grandchildren.
Kerry Millard - 31/10/2005
I had never seen Ken before live and I came out five hours later thinking this man is a comical genius. I was overwhelmed with the guy's energy at 78! He kept me laughing all night - not many people can do that now. I do think he has a very loveable way of making good clean jokes and just being funny without being blue or swearing. Now that's funny. Thanks Ken your a star
Steve Brydon - 24/10/2005
Ken Dodd is an icon. He never fails an audience. I wish Ken was 24 again so he could go on again for another 50 years or more.
Kevan Pattison - 17/10/2005
Had the pleasure of my first Doddy show this year in Blackpool and after 6 hrs + went home totally tickled. He is the king of the comedians and its the best £10 I have ever spent. Doddy may you go on forever
- 12/10/2005
Ken Dodd, the greatest. Keep going Ken, and thank you for all the laughter.
Gwinny - 22/08/2005
Ken Dodd is the best and no one will ever beat him. Lets hope we have many more years of his brilliant sense of humour
Andy H - 30/07/2005
When will this man get the true recognition he deserves. All of the best 'old timers' like Mick Miller, Norman Collier and Doddy have stayed the course because they've retained their child-like air of bonkersness. I am amazed and disapppointed to see that he isn't involved in Liverpool Comedy Festival. Treasure
Frances McKenna - 18/07/2005
Having seen Ken at the Lyceum Theatre in Sheffield, July 16. I must say the evening was magical. There are few entertainers who are at his level. He is a comic genius. We laughed and laughed, and my mother now 81, who had not been well lately said she had never felt happier. So I am personally grateful to Ken. It proves the saying laughter is the best medicine. Thank you Ken for an unforgettable evening.
David - 22/06/2005
Ken is a fantastic humble man, I have worked with him numerous times and every time he has been so humble and caring. A man who is the same on or off the stage. A credit to comedy and such a credit to theatre.
Nigel - 20/06/2005
Ken Dodd is definately a one-off! I've watched his tapes so many times I know the script, but still laugh to the point of crying. One Christmas, over dinner, I laughed so much at his routine I had to be carried to the sofa because my friends thought I was having a fit. May you live forever, Ken
Kim Barker - 13/06/2005
I went to see Ken Dodd on 11th June and couldn't believe how good he was. His show lasted for five and a half hours; he is a comic genius, especially for his age. I don't think there is a living comic who could match his stamina. He really is one of the best
Luke - 07/06/2005
The best entertainer there is, I have never laughed so much in my life
Jon - 18/05/2005
Irritating, dated, overlong, embarassing, sinister, tragic.
Kat - 04/04/2005
He doesn't need bad language or smutty humour - he is truly a comic genius fit for the whole family. He certainly gives you your money's worth on his live shows, too. Sharp one liners, great singing voice, hilarious act. This guy needs a great big comedy medal - he's one of the last brilliant 'old' comedians. They will never make another Doddy!
Anne Francombe - 03/04/2005
I have been to see Ken many times over more years than I care to remember. He always finds time for his fans and is happy to stay behind and chat even though he is clearly tired after one of his marathon shows. I only wish that he would get more recognition for his achievements. Perhaps we should all do a spot of letter writing to make this possible. He is a lovely man, very kind and genuine. I saw him only yesterday at Peterborough when he stated that he intends to go on performing for as long as he is able, he really is one of the last true kings of comedy, long may he reign.
Graham - 26/03/2005
We arrived home at 4am after seeing Ken Dodd at Salisbury City Hall for the first time. His wit and banter had us chuckling all through the five hour show, true British humour at its best.
Ace Rimmer - 13/01/2005
One word. Genius. Theres nothing more to say except - this man should be god.
Rosemary Ellingham - 04/01/2005
I love him, he is a genius. The last and best of comic greats.
Jeff Muldoon - 10/12/2004
I think we have just witnessed the funniest man on earth doing what he does best. For five and a half hours he had us in stitches at his 50 years celebratory Christmas show at St Helens Theatre Royal. 'Sir' Ken would be a fitting title for this man who's kept this country laughing for many a year.
Danny - 30/11/2004
Really sharp one liners and stupidity has me in bits. He doesn't have the best gags but it is the way he tells them. He also does not have to swear or be crude to get a laugh. It is a treasure for us to have a comedian of Ken's calabre.
Jean Emery - 08/11/2004
Ken Dodd is one of the nicest people you could ever want to meet, he has never forgotten his roots and always has time for everyone, just returned to Canada from seeing Ken in Blackpool,. His show is so good we visit the UK every year just to see him, and hopefully will be able to do so for many more years to come. he is a real gentleman.
Maureen Coar - 30/08/2004
I had the pleasure of working with Ken Dodd on theBritannia Pier at Gt.Yarmouth back in the Fifthies. I was only in the chorus line, but I was chosen to throw a rose at him.I think he is a wonderful comedian.
Roy Bates - 18/04/2004
What a wonderful 3.5 hours of laughter with 20 minutes to catch your breath at the interval. I think that you (Ken) ought to be on prescription for at times there is very little to find that funny.
Droog Robinson - 25/02/2004
Watching Ken Dodd is still the funniest way of spending the better part of four hours that I can think of, at least with my clothes on. Ken is a true comic genius, the last link with Music Hall. His act should bear a health warning: the good news is that laughter is the best medicine, so you get a tonic and a half, the bad news is that you might just die laughing. I was in physical distress last time I saw him. The one, the only, the greatest.
Simon Moore - 25/01/2004
I used to think that Ken Dodd was very amusing at one time. Then he seemed to have lost his appeal, and I finally realised why: when he did seem funny I was about 10 years old. The sort of material he performs is perfectly suited for kids that age, or failing that, adults with this type of mental age .
