Scouser Jamie Sutherland has an impressive, confident delivery – but it can’t hide the over-familiarity of the subject matter. He starts with a couple of pub gags, talks about women binge drinking (which he likes, as it’s the only way he looks attractive, ho ho), throws out a couple of chat-up lines (funny, but I wouldn’t vouch for his ownership of them) and then talks about vibrators. It’s all very obvious comedy-by-numbers; and while his upbeat, in-control style is compelling, the lack of substance or originality can’t be covered up. It would be good to see this performance skill used for good, rather than to service the laziness in the writing. October 2005
