Dave Skinner Dave Skinner

The gaunt Dave Skinner may appear somewhat earnest, but his material proves incongruously silly. As he chats about monkeys or some such nonsense, he tosses out some very good jokes indeed, even if his routines tend towards being overly verbose.

In fact, this isn't the only aspect of his act where it feels as if Skinner should be capable of delivering more than he actually does. Although he looks relaxed on stage, he doesn't yet command it; some routines don't gel despite featuring a smattering of decent lines, while others, such as his material about incest, simply fail to lodge in the mind.

That can't be said of the assured, crowd-pleasing finale which - although featuring that most familiar of devices: the Sean Connery impression - conjures up an image that will haunt you for a while.

It suggests Skinner the potential for solid career in comedy, where other gags promise even more. But at this relatively early stage in his career, it still feels as if he's finding his comedy feet.
