Andrew Maxwell: Waxin'
Note: This review is from 2007
In this year’s foray, Maxwell is waxin’ about things that baffle him. Religion, Bertie Aherne and the IRA are all mercilessly ribbed as he leaves no comedic stone unturned.
If you have ever wondered why, for so many comics, ‘a funny thing happened to me…’ on their way somewhere, see Maxwell and find out why.
It is because instead of going home when he finds a swimming pool closed, he climbs the fence and is willing to head-to-head with a police officer, just to get his swim. Maxwell pushes people’s buttons, winds them up and then capitalises on the madness that he has created in his material.
Most of us would not throw Caution to the Wind and call the Irish Premier a ‘motherfucker’ on national television. And if we did, we would probably avoid Aherne’s local pub the following week, but not Maxwell.
He is the class clown who is not afraid to act out the mischief we all wish we could. And thank god for that, because it would be a much duller month without him.
