Danielle Ward – Original Review

Review by Steve Bennett

Absurdist Ward is clearly a child of the Lee & Herring generation, with her off-kilter material clearly influenced by their droll outlook.

Her darkly odd set seemingly draws its inspiration from the grotesque, and unhealthy obsession with conjoined Twins and the ungodly hybrids of human and chimpanzee.

The routine about Siamese Twins Lori and Reba Schapell, one of whom performs a needless-to-say bizarre county and western set, is especially memorable. Where it could have been in very dubious taste, but my mixing her cynicism with awe she manages to knock off some of the uncomfortable edges, without sacrificing any of the humour.

As a sophomore stand-up, her delivery has yet to match the keenness of the writing, but it is improving all the time. And it surely won’t be long until she makes the leap from accomplished new act to an established feature on the comedy scene.
