Frankie Boyle – Original Review

Review by Steve Bennett

It would be a brave heckler who tackled this lively Glaswegian, whose in-your-face manner and playfully savage wit make him a formidable force. The flip side, though, is that such a sledgehammer approach can intimidate more subdued audiences, making the atmosphere unnecessarily tense.

Aside from that, Boyle has a wealth of impressive material, as the application of that aggressive stance to his diverse targets bears plenty of fruit.

He's not limited in his scope, equally at home with topical material, observational stuff, or the straightforward knob gag. The newsier stuff is the strongest - ferociously mocking rather than overtly political - though he covers such a range that there's something here for everyone.
