Honorary degrees for Phill Jupitus and Mark Steel

Kent University doles out the diplomas

Phill Jupitus and Mark Steel are to receive honorary degrees from the University of Kent next month.

Both will receive Doctor of Arts degrees ‘in recognition of their contribution to British popular culture’.

Jupitus has previously given talks at the university’s Canterbury campus to tie in with its stand-up comedy archive.

And Steel was born in Swanley in Kent, although he has not always been flattering about his hometown – suggesting that you would have to have a death wish to go into a pub there and announce you’re from out of towne.

The pair will be receiving their awards at a ceremony at Canterbury Cathedral on July 10.
