Friends complain that 'woke mob' cost Lisa Jane Spencer her job

A comedy content creator is in line to receive more than £19,500 after being ‘cancelled’ for posting a racist video.

White Australian Lisa Jane Spencer lost her job in a spa after posting an offensive skit about Aboriginal people to Instagram.

Now one of her friends has set up a crowdfunder railing at the ‘woke "cancel-culture" mob’ for costing an ‘intelligent, fair-natured’ woman her job – which has so far raised more than AU$26,000.

In the clip – which also apparently mocked the trans community – Spencer portrayed herself as someone who had ‘transitioned’ into an Aboriginal woman. She then illustrated her new persona by sniffing petrol from a jerry can and applying for government benefits.

The clip was portrayed as coming from a documentary aired by public broadcaster SBS, who complained about the use of its logo as copyright infringement. That prompted Instagram to remove the sketch, which Spencer then reuploaded with a new watermark that reads: ‘Special Woke Service’. 

The content creator claimed people ‘bullied’ SBS to take their action and saying the should have been protected under Australian law that allows ‘fair dealing for the purposes of satire’.

She also told her follower that her employers ‘fired me yesterday morning on the spot with no notice, after people publicly and illegally doxxed where I work’ – and said she was taking legal advice.

Posting another video justifying her original skit, Spencer said: ‘Stereotypes exist for a reason  and sometimes the best medicine really is laughter. If the joke is about you learning to laugh at yourself might be the most powerful thing you can do.’

The crowdfunding page, which also invites supporters to pray for Spencer, says: ‘Lisa was brutally harassed and bullied in response to a harmless comedy clip.’

SBS said of the posts: 'The posts and individuals are in no way associated with our content and have been reported. SBS unequivocally condemns all forms of racism and recognises the damaging impact it has on individuals, communities and social cohesion. Such views have no place in Australian society.'
