Peter Kay returns to the stage

Two charity Q&A sessions next month

Peter Kay is to make a rare public appearance next month, at a Q&A in Manchester.

It will be his first time on stage in more than three years, when he made a surprise appearance at a charity screening of his BBC sitcom Car Share in April 2018.

The comic has kept out of the pubic eye since cancelling a mammoth stand-up tour in 2017 for family reasons, days after announcing the dates.

He has only been on TV twice since then: for the 2018 finale of Car Share and on the BBC’s Big Night In telethon early last year, when he introduced his Amarillo video. That clip was recorded in the garden of his Bolton home as he wore a sun hat and ate a lollipop.

Now he will be back on stage for two Q&A sessions at 3pm and 8pm on August 7.

Proceeds from the tickets, priced £40, will go towards Doing It For Lauraand  The Brain Tumour Charity

Two and half  years ago, Laura Nuttall, from Barrowford  in Lancashire, was 18 and in her first term at uni when, after a couple of headaches and a routine eye test, she was given the devastating diagnosis of Glioblastoma, a grade 4 brain cancer with a prognosis of 12 to 18 months.

She has since been through two brain surgeries, 30 sessions of radiotherapy and 12 months of chemotherapy and soon exhausted all the treatment options available in the UK.

Her family identified experimental immunotherapy available in Germany and Laura has been making regular trips to Cologne when Covid has allowed.  But she needs money to keep paying for  the treatment – and is currently crowdfunding  the £80,000  required for the next batch of treatment.

She met Kay for a drink as part of a bucket list mission she set herself after her diagnosis. She also met Michelle Obama, steered a Royal Navy warship down the Manchester ship canal and went fishing with Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse.

Laura has just completed her second year at Manchester University and is a young ambassador for the Brain Tumour Charity.

Tickets for Kay’s Q&A sessions go on sale on Friday at 9am here.
