Apple TV is Trying

Streaming services orders new Britcom with Imelda Staunton and Rafe Spall

Imelda Staunton and Rafe Spall are to star in a relationship comedy called Trying for Apple's on-demand TV service.

The eight-part sitcom is the first British show commissioned for the new streaming service and will launch on the platform on May 1.

Made by BBC Studios, it also stars Cuckoo's Esther Smith as Nikki, the partner of Spall's character Jason, who are both desperate to have a baby.

Chortle first revealed the series in July under its working title Alabama – although Apple only made the announcement official yesterday.

It also features Darren Boyd and Phil Davis.

Catastrophe's Jim O’Hanlon directed all eight episodes, which were written by Andy Wolton, a former Mock The Week writer who broke into broadcasting by being chosen for the prestigious BBC Radio writer's bursary in 2011.
