Former Britain's Got Talent contestant triumphs at Leicester Square Theatre

Gatis Kandis has been named this year’s ‘Not-So-New’ Comedian Of The Year by Leicester Square Theatre.

The London-based Latvian stand-up is probably best known for appearing in Britain’s Got Talent in 2012, when he initially baffled judges with his anti-comedy shtick. But he eventually won them round with Simon Cowell saying: ‘You're the funniest, unfunny comedian.’

Now he takes home £1,000 in the London’ venue’s annual contest, previously known as Old Comedian Of The Year.

However it was rebranded this yaer amid fears the name was putting off potential entrants. Comics have to be just 35 or older to qualify.

Declan Kennedy was runner-up, winning £500, and  Russell Arathoon third, scooping £250.

Also taking part were Arielle Souma, David Mills, Davina Bentley,  Emily McQuade,   Graeme Collard, Lolly Jones, Nick Horseman, Pete White, and Sean Craig Turner.

The show was compered by 85-year-old Lynn Ruth Miller and headlined by last year’s winner, Ade Campe, the alter-ego of Naomi Paxton.
