Netflix remakes Dead Set... in Brazil

Charlie Brooker’s zombie horror-comedy Dead Set is to be resurrected.

Netflix is remaking the 2008 series – which starred Jaime Winstone, Riz Ahmed and Davina McCall – for Brazilian audiences.

Filming has begun on the new series in Rio de Janeiro after local director Cláudio Torres adapted Brooker’s five-episode scripts.

The original was set in the Big Brother house, but in the remake the zombie apocalypse hits a fictional reality show –  Olimpo, The House Of The Gods – during its elimination nigh

Brooker told trade website Deadline: ‘It’s incredible to see the ways in which Torres has reimagined this series, setting it in a city as iconic as Rio and tapping into Brazilian pop culture in such a sharp way.’

And Torres said: ‘My challenge was to turn a five-part anthology miniseries into a series that can unfold into many seasons without losing the spirit, humour and social critique that Charlie conceived in the original Dead Set.’

Brooker and Netflix content chief Ted Sarandos visited the Reality Z set this week.

The series is set to be released on Netflix around the world next year.

Meanwhile, the original, which first aired on Channel 4, is available on Netflix – which also hosts Brooker’s Black Mirror anthology series.
