NBC pilots a sitcom for Saturday Night Live

Chris Rock is to direct the new TV comedy vehicle for Saturday Night Live star Kenan Thompson.

In the sitcom, Saving Kenan, the SNL cast member plays a newly widowed dad determined to do the best for his kids, while begrudgingly letting his persistent father-in-law become more involved in their lives.

Now Rock has joined the project, too, the Hollywood trade press is reporting.

This will not be the stand-up's first time behind the camera. He directed the films Head Of State, I Think I Love My Wife, and Top Five, all of which he also wrote or co-wrote as well as starred in.

He also directed an episode of the series Everybody Hates Chris, about his early life, and Amy Schumer's recent stand-up special, Live at the Apollo.

Saving Kenan is being developed for NBC, the network which also airs Saturday Night Live.
