Scott Bennett triumphs at Midlands Comedy Awards
Scott Bennett has been named best act at the annual Midlands Comedy Awards, with Barry Dodds recognised as Best MC for the fourth year in a row.
Yorkshireman Bennett, who was support act for Rob Brydon’s latest national tour, also picked up the Best Live Show award for Leap Year. Black Country resident Laura Monmoth’s LGBTQZX getting the runner-up prize.
In the Best New Act category, Douglas Carter won a tightly-fought race, with Donald Mackerel coming a very close second.
Best Comedy Club went to Birmingham’s Glee Club who beat Funhouse Comedy in a repeat of last year’s result.
The Best Small Comedy Club award was picked up by NCF Comedy, which runs shows at venues across the East and West Midlands and organises the Nottingham Comedy Festival.
Awards director Jay Islaam commented: ‘A lot of new names were recognised in our shortlists this year, which demonstrates that fresh talent is emerging and developing constantly in our region.
‘It’s been an interesting year for the Awards. At one point we’d pretty much accepted they wouldn’t be happening at all, but the Midlands comedy community were adamant they continue.
‘This is our fifth year, and we’d like to thank all the comedians and comedy promoters who voted to decide the results.’
A new organiser of the awards pulled out at the last minute, categories was cut from ten to six.
