Netflix orders a Katherine Ryan sitcom

The Duchess revolves around a single mum in London

Katherine Ryan is making a Netflix sitcom loosely based on her own life.

The comic will write, executive produce, and star in The Duchess, about a ‘fashionably disruptive’ single mum living in London with her daughter Olive, her 'greatest love'.

Ryan is a single mum living in London with her eight-year-old daughter, and in an interview earlier this year she said: ‘I'm a pretty bad actress when I'm playing anyone but myself.’

But her publicist insisted The Duchess ‘isn’t even loosely based’ on Ryan’s own life.

According to the on-demand service, the plot of the comedy revolves around her character debating having a second child with her greatest enemy, Olive’s dad, to try to double her maternal joy.

Netflix has ordered six half-hour episodes from Clerkenwell Films, the BBC Studios-backed production house whose credits include The End Of The F***ing World and Lovesick.

The streaming giant has also today confirmed that Ryan’s second stand-up special, Glitter Room, will be available on the service, as Chortle revealed last month.

Last year, Ryan became only the second British-based comedian to have a special released globally on Netflix after Jimmy Carr, released under the title In Trouble.

The Canadian-born comic will also be a team captain in Netflix’s first bash at a panel show, The Fix, opposite DL Hughley and hosted by Jimmy Carr, her co-presenter on Comedy Central’s Your Face Or Mine and Roast Battle

She also recently filmed The Stand Up Show with Katherine Ryan for The Comedy Network in Canada during the Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal, which is set to be released later this year.
