A belated Halloween treat

The week's comedy on demand

This week’s comedy on demand.

Dead Set

With uncharacteristically bad timing, Netflix made this 2008 comedy-horror series available yesterday, the day after Halloween. Nevertheless, the show created by a pre-Black Mirror Charlie Brooker and probably more horror than comedy (though it’s not without bleak humour) is well worth a revisit.

It’s set during a season of Big Brother, where the contestants and production crew inside the sealed-off house realise they have been sheltered from a zombie outbreak outside. The cast also includes Jaime Winstone, Riz Ahmed, Kevin Eldon and Davina McCall as herself. Watch here.

The Degenerates

Bucking the trend for sensitive, woke, comedy, Netflix has just released this batch of half-hour stand-up specials from ‘crude’, ‘offensive’ and ‘outrageous’ American comedians Big Jay Oakerson, Joey Diaz, Liza Treyger, Yamaneika Saunders, Christina P and Brad Williams. Watch here.

Alexander Fox: Ringo

Comedy and drumming collide in the second stand-up special of the year to combine the two after Fred Armisen’s Netflix show Comedy For Drummers. In this, first performed in Edinburgh last year, Fringe debutant Alexander Fox, describes his teenage obsession with the Beatles skinsman, and how their lives became entangled in later years. As well as Ringo anecdotes, expect impressions of Alan Rickman, James Bond, and a girlfriend portrayed in the style of Pingu.. Available now to subscribers to NextUp.

Superbob

This 2015 low-budget comedy about a Peckham postman who develops superpowers has just landed on Amazon Prime. Stand-up Brett Goldstein stars, and also co-wrote the script, while Catherine Tate has a cameo supporting role. Read our original review here and watch it here

Lazer and Neon

Tony Law and Matthew Highton become YouTube 'influencers' Lazer and Neon in this new web series, despite being a few years older than your average social media personalities… and not always getting it right. Three episodes of the series, based on them reacting to viral footage, have so far been released on Law’s YouTube channel, including the latest - a Halloween special revolving aroud ghosts.
