I Died Up There...

US stand-up drama axed

I’m Dying Up Here, the American drama set in the stand-up scene of 1970s Los Angeles, has been cancelled after two seasons.

With Jim Carrey as one of its its executive producers, the show revolved around a group of comedians in the nascent scene, overseen by hard-edged comedy club owner Goldie, played by Melissa Leo and based on Comedy Store owner Mitzi Shore.

The show has aired on Sky Atlantic in the UK.

But the series always struggled in the ratings for original broadcaster Showtime, with the first season averaging just 143,000 viewers per episode. Season two did slightly better at 180,000 thanks to improved scheduling, but the figures were still disappointing.

It was based on the non-fiction book of the same name by William Knoedelseder and boasted a large ensemble cast icnluding   Ari Graynor, Clark Duke, Michael Angarano, RJ Cyler, Andrew Santino, Erik Griffin, Al Madrigal, Brad Garrett and Jake Lacy.
