Comedy writer and It'll Be Alright On The Night host was 96
Denis Norden, a luminary of post-war British broadcast comedy who became best known for presenting ITV outtakes show It’ll Be Alright On The Night. has died at the age of 96.
As a pioneering writer he enjoyed a long collaboration with Frank Muir, notably creating the radio sketch show Take It From Here.
He died this morning at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, North London, his children, Nick and Maggie Norden, said. He had been there for several weeks.
They paid tribute to ‘a wonderful dad, a loving grandfather and great great-grandfather - he gave his laughter mongering to so many. He will be in our hearts forever.’
Showbusiness colleague paying their respects include Rory Bremner, who tweeted: 'RIP the great Denis Norden. One of the finest (and tallest) writers of a great generation. Doyen, gentleman, giant in every sense.'
Radio presenter and former TV warm-up act Greg Scott added: 'Just heard about Denis Norden. The gentlest of gentlemen. The kindest soul. The loveliest human being. Met and worked with him on Countdown a number of times and was always an utter joy to be around. A very sad start to the day. Sleep well, Sir.'
