UK tour before West End run

Hugh Dennis has been can alongside soprano Lesley Garrett in a new stage comedy based on the Nativity story.

The Messiah has been penned by the writer of West End hit The 39 Steps, Patrick Barlow. It revolves around a travelling theatre troupe of two actors and an opera singer, who arrive by camel in the ancient town of Birmingham to masterfully enact the greatest story ever told.

The show – which also stars John Marquez, who plays PC Joe Penhale in Doc Martin – is described as ‘an hilarious Christmas comedy that conjures up the sublime, the ridiculous and the truly angelic’.

It runs at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre on October 18 to 27, before visiting New Theatre in Cardiff, Lyceum in Sheffield, Cheltenham Everyman Theatre and Richmond Theatre in London where it ends on December 1.

Producers say the tour comes in the lead-up to a West End run, but no details have yet been announced for that.
