Jon Stewart to release his first stand-up special in 21 years

New deal with HBO

Jon Stewart is to release his first stand-up comedy specials in 21 years.

The former Daily  Show host has signed a deal to tape two new shows for HBO – although the broadcaster has not revealed when they will air.

Yesterday’s announcement follows the collapse of a short-form topical animated series Stewart had spent more than a year working on for HBO. The series was scrapped because of ‘technical issues’.

Stewart said he was ‘thrilled’ with the HBO deal, adding: ‘ They've always set the standard for great stand-up specials. Plus, I can finally use up the last of the Saddam Hussein jokes left over from my first special.’ 

The comic’s last TV special was  1996’s Jon Stewart: Unleavened.also for HBO.
