Seinfeld signs up for two stand-up specials and more Comedians In Cars

Jerry Seinfeld has signed an exclusive new deal with Netflix.

The move means 24 new episodes of his talk show Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee will be streamed on the platform for later this year.

And he will also tape two new stand-up specials to be available globally.

Furthermore, the comedian will help develop unspecified scripted and non-scripted comedy programming for Netflix, with the company saying that ‘additional elements of the deal will be announced later’.

The new arrangement means that all 59 previous episodes of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee – previously made for the Crackle on-demand service – will be available on Netflix too.

‘When I first started thinking about Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, the entire Netflix business model consisted of mailing out DVDs in envelopes,’ said Seinfeld. ‘I love that we are now joining together, both at very different points.’

Ted Sarandos, chief content officer at Netflix, added: ‘Jerry is known the world over as both a great TV innovator and beloved comic voice We are incredibly proud to welcome him to the Netflix comedy family.’

Seinfeld added that Sarandos and Netflix ‘not only have the same enthusiasm for the art of stand-up comedy as I do, but the most amazing technology platform to deliver it in a way that has never existed before. I am really quite charged up to be moving there.’

It is not known how much the new deal is worth, but when Chris Rock last year signed up to Netflix to record two stand-up specials, the package was a reported $40million.

Meanwhile, all 180 episodes of Seinfeld’s classic sitcom are currently available to stream on rival Amazon Prime.
