Hamish and Dougal become stage stars

New theatre show based on Radio 4 characters

A new stage play has been created based around Radio 4 comedy characters Hamish and Dougal.

The pair, created by Barry Cryer and Graeme Garden, have been entertaining the listeners of I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue since 1979 – and now an amateur dramatic society has been granted the rights to use the characters on stage.

The script for the new production, launching at Chorley Little Theatre next month, is based on the scripts from the Hamish And Dougal radio series, which ran from 2002 to 2007.

They were by Ian Robinson,  chairman of the town’s amateur dramatic society. He said: ‘Comedies always do well at Chorley Little Theatre so we were looking for new things to do, when we released this was something we could really put our stamp on.

‘Jeremy Hardy starred in the original radio series so when he did a gig here we asked if he thought it was possible, he got in touch with Graeme Garden, and he very kindly granted us permission"

‘There are challenges in making it visual, especially when a throwaway radio gag needs a special prop but that just adds to the fun. We’re having lots of laughs in rehearsals

The show runs from Monday 12 to Saturday 17 September .
