First British Comedy Awards nominations out

The shortlist has been announced for the ‘king or queen of comedy’ at the British Comedy Awards.

Previous winners Jack Whitehall and Sarah Millican are again up for the award – alongside David Mitchell, Alan Carr, Graham Norton and Lee Mack.

Ironically, since it's named after an hereditary ruler, this is the only category in the awards to be voted by the public, with phone lines opening at 11am today, and close during the award ceremony.

The nominees in the rest of the 15 categories are kept under wraps until they are announced on Channel 4 on December 4.

Yet the broadcaster has let slip that Mel and Sue, Ant & Dec, Adam Hills, James Cordon and Miranda Hart are among those shortlisted.

Jonathan Ross will again host the awards – the 24th – live on Channel 4 from 9pm on Thursday December 12; with Lauren Laverne and Angelos Epithemiou covering the after-party on E4.

To vote for your favourite comedy personality, call 09020 50 58 and select 01 for Alan Carr, 02 for David Mitchell, 03 for Graham Norton, 04 for Jack Whitehall, 05 for Lee Mack and 06 for Sarah Millican. Mobile and BT landline votes cost 35p.
