Stand-up gives Gordon Brown the fist

As Gordon Brown stood on stage awaiting the election results from his Kirkcaldy & Cowdenbeath constituency in the early hours of Friday, TV viewers could not fail to notice the imposing figure behind him, his eyes hidden behind sunglasses and fist raised in defiance.

That candidate was Deek Jackson, candidate for the Landless Peasant Party. And, it can be revealed, a part-time comedian.

He polled just 57 votes for his policies, key of which was the abolition income tax in favour of land tax, to encourage large landowners to give up large areas to those who wish to become self-sufficient. In contrast, Gordon Brown received 29,559 votes.

But away from the campaign trail, Jackson also uses the Scottish open-mic comedy circuit to help spread his militant views.

Last November, he was reportedly booed off Edinburgh's Stand Comedy Club's Red Raw new act night after two minutes of material about ‘how he wouldn't be happy until the Queen was pushing out ethnic babies to prove she wasn't racist'.

And a review of one of his performances in the Edinburgh Evening News said: ‘His paranoid patter could have come straight from an Anarchist textbook’ and noted one of the finest points of his set: 'He was brief.'

He also makes semi-comic news reports from his political stance, posting them on YouTube, where they can attract up to 100,000 views.

Jackson – whose party boasts just 40 members – refused to shake Brown's hand as the Prime Minister met fellow candidates at the count.
