Jerry Seinfeld, marriage counsellor

New series for sitcom king

Jerry Seinfeld is returning to TV after 11 years, with a celebrity reality show.

The comic will act as a marriage counselor for celebrity couples in the new NBC series The Marriage Ref.

The series, co-created with Oprah Winfrey's executive producer Ellen Rakieten, will feature celebrities talking about the highs and lows of married life.

But Seinfeld says the show will be amusing.

He told Hollywood trade magaine Variety: ‘This is not a therapy show, it's a comedy show. After nine years of marriage, I have discovered that the comedic potential of this subject is quite rich.’

NBC Entertainment executive Ben Silverman said: ‘Jerry called us up and told us he had an idea. He flew in to sit down with us, and he and Ellen pitched the show. We were laughing the whole time as they went through the concept.

‘As Jerry noted, some of the greatest comedies in history have been about marriage.’

No date has yet been scheduled for the new show to air.
