Conchords' Emmy hope

Comedy 'longlist' revealed

Flight Of The Conchords and the US version of The Office are among the comedies on a ‘longlist’ of potential Emmy nominations.

For the first time ever, America’s most prestigious TV awards have revealed a list of the top ten programmes, as chosen by all its voting members.

This weekend, a panel of judges will attend screenings of all the shows to produce the final list of five nominees, to be revealed on July 17.

The full longlist in the comedy category is: 30 Rock, Entourage, The Office, Two And A Half Men, Ugly Betty, Weeds, Flight Of The Conchords, Pushing Daisies, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Family Guy.

If Family Guy gets through it will be the first animated show to be nominated for a comedy Emmy. Cartoons such as The Simpsons have tended to stick to the animation category, so the animators would be eligible for an Emmy, not just the writers and performers.

To avoid that problem, Family Guy entered twice: the show itself in the comedy category, and an hour-long special Blue Harvest, a Star Wars spoof, in the animated category.
