Stand-up bids to become an MP

Stand-up Ayesha Hazarika has launched a bid to become a Labour MP.

The 31-year-old has made the shortlist to fight the ultra-safe Glasgow Central seat at the next general election, when sitting MP Mohammad Sarwar will stand down.

She is no stranger to politics, having been a spin-doctor to Patricia Hewitt, when she was Trade and Industry Secretary. Her current day job is as a political lobbyist with music giant EMI.

Glasgow-raised Hazarika is one of four people fighting to be Labour’s candidate, with Sawar’s son Anas tipped as the most likely to be chosen. The decision will be made on September 10.

In the 2005 election, Sawar got almost as many votes as all the other candidates put together.
