Welsh village indignant over Little Britain sketch

An isolated Welsh community has been upset over a running gag in sketch show Little Britain.

Comics Matt Lucas and Dave Walliams chose the tiny farming settlement of Llanddewi Brefi - population 638 - for their gag about Daffyd, the only gay in the village.

Posing in PVC hot-pants and see-through vest, Lucas's character (pictured) continually bemoans his loneliness - though he panics when he actually meets another real-life 'homosexualists'.

But indignant villages have complained that their village is a lot more cosmopolitan than the programme portrays - and that there have actually been not one, but two gays in Llanddewi Brefi.

Not at the same time, admittedly, but at least in living memory.

Yvonne Evans, landlady at the village pub The New Inn, told The Western Mail:"I have never seen the programme but we did have a gay man in Llanddewi Brefi once.

"In fact we have had two gay men in my memory.

"But they did not live here at the same time. They missed each other, which is a pity I suppose.

"One of them showed me a picture of him wearing a big woman's hat, he did look quite glamorous actually.

"I am going to have to watch this show because a few people have come in and started talking about it."

In fact, the paper could find only one person in the village who had actually seen the show.

Lee Fromling said: "If it gets any more popular I am sure we will have a lot more people coming in here asking about the only gay man in Llanddewi Brefi though."

Lucas and Walliams will be at the Virgin Megastor in Piccadilly, London, from 6pm on January 15 to sign copies of the Little Britain CD. Click here to buy an unsigned copy from Amazon.
