Fringe al fresco

Comics' impromptu open-air show

Stephen K Amos launched an impromptu open-air comedy show after his Edinburgh venue had to be evacuated.

Hundreds of Fringe-goers gathered outside the Gilded Balloon after its second fire scare in four days.

But Amos decided to continue his show on the steps of Bristo Square, the concrete space in front of the venue more usually associated with skateboarders.

Around a dozen comics joined the show, including Mitch Benn, Sarah Kendall and Daniel Kitson.

Amos said: "At first, I was saying "if you haven't got a ticket for my show, don't watch. But when Kitson appeared the crowd went mad for him.

"It was a warm night and a great show and in the spirit of the Fringe."

The show went on for more than an hour, before the venue was given the all-clear.

Tuesday night's alert had been caused when overheated wiring gave off a burning smell.
