Gervais triumphs at Comedy Awards

Ricky Gervais and Peter Kay have both has triumphed in the British Comedy Awards, each winning two accolades.

Gervais was crowned Best Comedy Actor for his role as David Brent in The Office, which won Best TV Comedy .

Kay, who was nominated for best actor, was named Writer of the Year for Phoenix Nights, which also won the People's Choice award after a phone-in poll.

The list of winners, chosen by a selection of judges from the five terrestrial TV channels, is:

  • Best Comedy Actor: Ricky Gervais (The Office)
  • Best Comedy Actress: Kathy Burke (Gimme Gimme Gimmee)
  • Best Comedy Entertainment Personality: Graham Norton (V Graham Norton)
  • Best Comedy Newcomer: Kris Marshall (My Family)
  • Best New TV Comedy: The Kumars at No 42
  • Best TV Comedy: The Office
  • Best Comedy Drama: Auf Wiedersehen, Pet
  • Best Comedy Entertainment Programme: V Graham Norton
  • Best International Comedy Show: Six Feet Under
  • Best Comedy Film: Bend It Like Beckham
  • Writer Of The Year: Peter Kay
  • Lifetime Achievement Award: Michael Palin.
  • People's Choice: Phoenix Nights

This year is the first time that there has been no award for live stand-up comedy, despite a number of high-profile tours from Peter Kay, Lee Evans and others. When the awards started in 1990, there were four awards for stage work.
