Miles Jupp: Fibber In The Heat (A Cricket Tale)
Show type: Edinburgh Fringe 2010
A few years ago, disillusioned with comedy and acting, Perrier award nominated Miles decided he was going to pack it all in to follow his dream to become a cricket journalist. He attempted to achieve this by the unlikely, ill thought out and rather dishonest method of pretending to be one. After pulling a few strings and telling some whopping fibs, Miles couldn’t believe his luck when he found himself heading to India with the English sporting press to embark on a month long cricket tour with his heroes.

Quite the best "comedy" show I have ever seen. The story is delivered with wit and style - you laugh with him and want to weep for him. The language is precise and perfectly fitted. Never before have I booked to see the same show twice in a month. I have for this one!

Utterly bloody wonderful. I'm not a cricket fan, but this is much less about cricket than it is about really loving something and in that sense it could be about any sport or music or politics or anything. Cricket is not the core of the show, the love of cricket is, and what a show it is. Charming, funny and poignant - if it's touring you'd be a fool to miss it.

Myself and my girlfriend caught Miles Jupp's latest show last night (Fibber in the Heat) and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Don't expect any of his usual topical or political humour as this show is truly just a story of how he briefly tried to become a cricket journalist during the Ashes series in 2005. I have never been a cricket fan (nor will it matter if you aren't either) but I was quickly won over by Miles' infectious enthusiam for the sport. He positively radiates charm with such genuine zeal for cricket that you can't help but want to know how it all turns out. Although there are certainly plenty of comedic moments during the show, it's more of a lovely story which pulls you along for a surprisingly emotional journey. Lasting well over the scheduled hour, I was loving every moment of watching somebody truly comfortable in front of an audience. Miles clearly didn't put this show together to make you laugh (even though there are quite a few laugh out-loud-moments), he merely wanted to showcase his passion for cricket and the desire to make it a bigger part of his life. The story finishes as suddenly as it begins, in one of the most genuinely lovely endings I have ever seen in a Fringe show. If you catch Fibber In The Heat, you'll find yourself clapping furiously at the end whilst freely admitting that a show about cricket...was just that. A wonderful evening and a wonderful story.
