Funny Women Fringe Award
The Funny Women reviewers will be looking for the crème de la crème of female comics and female-oriented shows to compete for the 2008 NIVEA Funny Women Fringe Award.
Three showcase gigs will take place on August 8,9 and 10, where all invited acts and shows will have a chance to perform in front of the judges.
The best of these will then go forward into the final on August 11. The acts are competing for a £1,000 cash prize, as well as additional prizes from the Funny Women Fringe Award sponsor, NIVEA.

I agree with Sarah Miles. What is the point of having the equivalent of a 'special needs' award for.. erm 50 fucking per cent of the population. Lucille Ball would be spinning in her witty coffin. How dare we do this? It's political correctness and is doing female comedy a disservice. What the fuck do you think Joan Rivers did to get to where she is? If you want to play with the big boys then be as good as the.. erm.. big boys. Thatcher didn't ask for an all female Cabinet to make things a bit 'easier' did she? Think on. Bless them. It's so great that women get their own awards. We all know that they aren't really funny enough to compete in regular comedy competitions so, like with the special olympics, these lassies get a chance to compete on a levelled playing field. Hopefully soon we will be seeing Funny Blacks to give them a leg up too. Go sisters! Sarah Miles, August 2008 |
