Amateur Pro-Celebrity Karaoke (Free)
Join Jeff and special guests in a celebration of Karaoke classics we love to love (and hate). Sing, croon, rant about ludicrous lyrics by playing the musical phenomenon 'Karantoke,' laugh, cry if you want to. It's your party!

I wasn't at the show that Jane was at so can't really say whether her impression from that day was a fair one, but I can say that I went to this show several times towards the end of its run, and it was different each time. This is what made the show so refreshing and unique to me among the shows I saw in Edinburgh. The audience were an integral part of the show, and the experience was entirely dependent on who happened to be there - there was no set amount of comedy material to get through, and the fun came from having a laugh at everyone being silly together without the constraints of a pre-set format. As to the host, Jeff, I thought his rambling shambolic hit-and-miss style struck just the right note for encouraging people to participate without fear of looking like idiots. For the most part, the audiences did throw themselves into the spirit of the show and had a blast. Sure, it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I thought it was a much-needed antidote to some of the overly scripted, self-consciously witty, borderline patronising routines which abound at the Fringe. I went to see this today (Aug 16th) and, although I'm always up for a good time and I do usually love karaoke, I thought it was excruciatingly embarrassing watching Jeff - whose jokes and "you had to be there at the time" anecdotes must always sound funny in his head - die on his arse this afternoon. He performed a tragic David-Brent-Wannabe act which was met with silence and bemused looks from the audience (those who stayed, that is - a group of wise folk left ten minutes in). It wasn't so much karaoke but more a bloke with backing tracks and a few microsoft word files fed from his laptop into a nice looking telly. Mmm.. yeah, the telly was very swish, as was the whole venue. But my advice to you would be not to waste your time and spare Jeff the shame. jane, August 2007 |

I went on the first and 3rd days and thoroughly enjoyed myself, I took along my wife, 3 & 10 year old daughters and baby son and we all had great fun. My 10 year old ensured i sang the hit from Annie on Jeff's side. but we lost the game. On my 2nd visit due to bizarre scoring and a rip-roaring-group version of Elvis's Hound dog... Jeff won! Go, it's free, you will have fun, honest. www.myspace.com/gsmokeyjoe, August 2007 |
