To quote Larry David, it was "pretty pretty good". Although raw around the edges it was nice to see a bunch of young people try to parody the sickly Starbucks world of the plastic generation. Richard Curtis has always been a hated figure for me, a sort of white supremacist for middle-class, middle-income England (I mean, how can there be no black or Asian people in "Notting Hill"?). It was also good to see Brian Blessed resurrected onstage with a performance camper than Quentin Crisp's handbag. Although it was not what you might call a polished script, it is a show like this which makes the Free Fringe what it should be - an antidote to the banal mainstream that now seems to permeate much of the Festival. And hopefully next year some of these guys might get a better slot that allows them to try out new and more interesting ideas and get bigger audience Paul, August 2006 |
