Bill Hicks: Slight Return Show type: Edinburgh Fringe 2005
Bill Hicks: Slight Return

The premise of this show is excellent, though to begin with, it failed to live up to my expectations. Chris Early certainly does pull-off a very difficult feat in inimating Hicks' voice and (what he perceives to be modern-day Hicks) material, but his body language and facial expressions were more reminiscent of Keanu Reaves and Jim Carrey. That annoyed me, even though I kept telling myself it shouldn't matter. Eventually, I told myself that I was watching the comedic equivalent of a covers band done well. That seemed to allow me to enjoy the show more, coincidentally at the same time he did his fat kid/Columbine material; undoubtedly the best part of an otherwise fairly mediocre bunch of routines, albeit delivered in Hicks stylee. At the end of the show Early cleverly acts out his real self and his Hicks alter-ego discussing the merits of performing such a show. For all the standard stand-up formula stuff prior, this one piece made me forgive everything, and perhaps rescuse what might have been a show that left me numb into one I came close to saluting.

Chas Early takes the bold - some may say foolish step - of 'bringing back' Bill Hicks to cast his caustic comic eye on present day events - Iraq, internet porn, 9/11, drugs, GWB.....Having only seen snippets of Bill Hick's stage performances on TV - mainly Channel 4 - and having read big chunks of 'Love All the People' I wasn't too sure what to expect. As a piece of comedic homage it seemed to work well...in fact very well. Early certainly seems to have researched his subject well, and supported this with material that was Bill Hickesque and delivered it with confidence. A risky business, but Early really does pull it off...and the constant stream of giggles from a packed house seemed to suggest that they thought so too.
