Goose Nights

Original Review:
Imagine Greek mythology as tackled by Morecambe and Wise, and you'd be some way to understanding the real delight that is Goose Nights. For despite the seemingly erudite subject, the obscure title and Peepolykus's slightly poncey-looking name - this is solid, no-nonsense entertainment that is far, far from intellectual. Raucously yet skilfully performed, this fast-paced clowning mixes the best elements of over-the-top slapstick, enjoyable on-stage mugging and some great jokes - both visual and verbal. The talented trio delight in demolishing theatre's imaginary fourth wall, frequently breaking out to interact with the audience - a technique which culminates in a gloriously funny ball fight between performers and punters that regresses everyone back to days of unselfconscious childhood fun. In fact, the whole show has that uninhibited spirit of Saturday morning TV, but with an underlying, knowing intelligence which means adults can enjoy it too. Trev and Simon, who are making a botched attempt to occupy similar ground, could learn a lot from this. This innocent and unashamed spirit permeates ever moment of this fantastically enjoyable nonsense about the legend of Panos (a Greek waiter) and the seven tasks he must perform to save the human race from destruction by an irate Zeus. But, as I said, this is more Homer Simpson than Homer - brilliantly entertaining fun with a genuinely broad appeal. And don't be too quick to leave after the curtain call, for this lot save perhaps their best gag to last. Fabulous fun from beginning to end. Enjoy the ride. |
