Original Review:
This hyperactive show hits you like a tornado. A whirlwind of stand-up, improvisation and theatre, it's a joyous, life-affirming show from a superb comic creation. Mother's boy Maurice Clark leaves the house for the first time in six years to give a lecture on Jonathan Swift. Yet the excitable oddball soon abandons his ill-prepared treatise for a manic rant about his life and under-appreciated genius. Variously entertaining, insulting, embarrassing and wooing members of the audience, this social misfit leaps around the stage like a man possessed. His train of thought takes similar bounds, embarking on bizarre flights of fancy before landing at the inevitable conclusion that he, Maurice Clark, must run naked through the streets of Edinburgh proclaiming his new-found lust for life. And you, the audience, should follow. This is a stunningly engaging performance from Andrew Clover, who exudes more energy than a leaky nuclear reactor, and acts as an early-evening wake-up call for the most jaded of festival-goers. Great fun. |
