Original Review:
This hugely enjoyable all-action romp through six decades of comic-book heroes is an unexpected treat. Performed with verve by an enthusiastic and talented cast, the show offers something to enjoy at every turn of the metaphorical page. What makes this such fun are the small touches. The piece is punctuated with a plethora of neat and unexpected visual gags, many inspired and some touching on the genius. The skilful six-strong cast are required to act out everything - from Arctic huskies to a typewriter - all with unfailingly entertaining vitality. Like most comic books, the plot is slightly clunky, showing how superheroes, and more significantly, villains have evolved to reflect the concerns of the American people over the past half century or so. The story throws up some amusing stereotypes and its fail share of witty lines. Yet is the sheer theatrical experience itself that is such a joy, with pin-sharp performances and astute direction that other fringe shows would be wise to copy. |
