Helen da Silva – Original Review

Review by Steve Bennett

Da Silva has an undemanding and moderately amusing set - for 1995.

The routine is simply laden with out-of-date references: Gladiators, a five-year-old mobile phone ad, Oprah Winfrey... it's all very offputting.

And the bottom line is that' she's simply not good enough to be this complacent with her material.

It's as if she came up with an enjoyable enough 20 minutes, then felt she could sit back and retire from writing duties regardless of how the world moves on

So while the more timeless material plays better, the nagging feeling that this is lazy stuff never totally vanishes. And referring to 'Nineties women' and even using the punchline '..and so I stabbed him' does nothing to dispel that image.
