Rob Deering: Boobs 2008

Note: This review is from 2008

Review by Steve Bennett

Rob Deering is a very charming and likable comedian – endearing, witty and with a huge talent for performing. Here, he presents an entertaining hour of music and jokes, nothing more, nothing less. Very little is going to challenge you or make you think too hard, as the title itself makes instantly apparent.

The subject was decided when he made himself giggle by typing 8008 into a calculator. This is the level of sophistication that Deering’s comedy reaches – but to be far, he does do childish silliness very, very well.

The obvious topics are examined: scantily-clad drunk women, scantily clad drunk men with less than toned torsos, lad’s mags and girl bands. Deering pokes fun at them all, with amusing little ditties and some amazing guitar skills.

Once in a while this approach falls short, the acoustics in the 16ft cave that serves as his venue occasionally swallow up the lyrics behind the looped bass lines and guitar riffs, leaving the audience struggling to hear the punchline. Some of the subject matter is so familiar that even with Deering’s cheeky grin and confident delivery, it struggles to raise a smile let alone a laugh.

But most of his material will make you chuckle, it is hard not to be swept along with his abundant enthusiasm. There is no fake front with Deering. What you see is what you get: an hour of silliness and fun with a fantastic backing track.
