Damion Larkin – Original Review

Damion Larkin engenders some sympathy with his ‘cuddly loser’ stance, but he struggles to find consistency in his material.He’s capable of writing a decent joke, is engagingly self-mocking and tries to claim fresh perspectives on such staples as the difference between men and women.
But alongside this are much less assured gags on wider, stupider observations such as the fact Currys don’t sell curries.
His valiant attempts to be different mean he’s always trying out new material as he tries to figure out how to best use his navel-gazing comic attitude, which is in the Daniel Kitson ballpark. However, this can mean self-indulgence triumphing over the comedy in the sort of gigs that allow for experimentation.
Until Larkin can get it consistently right, the endearing persona gets him by, combined with a relaxed attitude on stage and a willingness to annotate and deconstruct his set when it’s not working.
