Jonathan Paylor – Original Review

Note: This review is from 2006

Review by Steve Bennett

Jonathan Paylor is a gay Arsenal fan from Yorkshire – none of which is a particularly fascinating fact, but still they form the basis for about half his material: talking about coming out to his friends – as a football follower (do you see what he did there…), or forming the basis for predictable puns about Seaman and Butts.

The rest of his set revolves around the mundane, a-bit-shit-but-we-like-it-that-way life in the North West, from Aldi shops to Blackpool. He’s at his best when being flippantly derisive about these ordinary lives and the ignorant-but-proud-of-it working-class people who live them, rather than in the straightforward observation.

It’s safe and familiar comic ground, and Paylor doesn’t add a great deal, but this material is reliable enough, even if too often it feels like a time-killing chat with a mate rather than the punchy product of solid writing.
