Chambers and Nettleton

Note: This review is from 2002

Review by Steve Bennett

Chambers and Nettleton are an immensely likeable pair of Northern lasses, full of pizzazz and with an assured, entertaining manner. So why don't I find them funnier?

Their revue-style songs are enjoyable enough, the double-act dynamic of dominant, sarcastic Chambers and dappy but enthusiastic Nettleton is natural and easy, and they seem at home on stage (or, as here, in a dank cave).

But the whole act seems very inconsequential when run out over a whole hour.

Their best routine, with the Royal Family cast as Star Wars characters, is brilliantly performed and worth more than a couple of chuckles - but the ideas behind it are quite derivative and old-fashioned.

But mostly the material does not match their considerable charm, and the pair are left to rely on their natural energy (often realised in the form of dance) to paper over their mediocre observations.
